Rummy is an exciting card game, which has a number of variants such as Gin Rummy, Oklahoma Gin, Basic Rummy, Kaluki, and many more. One can learn Rummy very easily because the rules are very simple. However, becoming a master Rummy player is very difficult because Rummy is a strategy game; and players who depend on luck alone will not get that far with Rummy.
To become an expert Rummy player, one needs a sharp memory and good working knowledge of Rummy strategies. Players ought to remember exactly which cards have been discarded. They should be able to intelligently guess the value of the cards held by their opponents. Above all, they should be able to keep track of all the cards played by them and their opponents. If Rummy players keep track of the cards drawn by opponents from the stock pile, they can avoid giving them cards that they might require in order to make a meld.
Successful Rummy players have great observation skills too. They are capable of carefully observing every move made by their opponents—the cards they draw, the cards they discard, their sets, their runs, and so on. What’s more, their ability to intelligently guess the value of their opponents’ cards gives them an upper hand. They can then cheerfully discard cards in such a way that they will be of no use to their opponents.
Players must also be able to conceal their cards well. Their opponents should not be able to guess the value of their cards. On the other hand, Rummy should be played in such a way that opponents get the wrong idea of the value of the cards a player is holding.
An understanding of the strategic value of every card in the deck will be of great help to Rummy players. In Rummy, lower cards are of greater value than higher cards. Middle cards have the greatest strategic value. Players should, therefore, retain lower and middle cards. For instance, sevens can be easily combined with a five-six, an eight-nine, and a six-eight; but aces can be used only in combination with threes and twos.
As far as possible, Rummy players must draw cards from the stock pile and make it difficult for opponents to keep track of their cards. Besides, Rummy players can prevent their opponents from creating a successful meld by drawing from the stock pile because opponents do not need the cards they have discarded.
A bit of bluff also helps Rummy players. While drawing cards from the discard pile, opponents can see the value of the card drawn. So, smart Rummy players can draw cards that they do not really need and let their opponents make major mistakes, which they can use for their benefit.
Above all, Rummy players must avoid taking unnecessary risks; this enables them to maintain their score status. To play a good game of Rummy, players must learn as many Rummy strategies as possible and practice hard to develop the required Rummy skills.
